About the Place
Lava Butte in Central Oregon is a stark yet stunning study in contrast. This ancient cinder cone and lava field form a sculptural landscape of deep rusts, charred blacks, and golden highlights. A gnarled juniper tree grows defiantly from the scorched earth, its twisted limbs reaching skyward like natural calligraphy.
The volcanic rock offers dramatic textures—sharp edges, fractured ridges, and subtle mineral shifts in color. The tree, by contrast, is alive and expressive, its form shaped by wind and time. The vivid blue sky above adds a striking counterpoint to the warm, earthy palette below.
This landscape is ideal for exploring expressive brushwork and high contrast. Use palette knives, bold lines, or thick pastels to capture the sharpness of the lava rock, then soften into the twisted organic forms of the tree. Light plays strongly here, casting angular shadows and emphasizing structure.
It's a dramatic setting—raw, resilient, and full of visual power.
